Old songs return to brave new singles chart

Snow Patrol have re-entered the top ten with their single Chasing Cars, thanks to radical changes in the way download sales are incorporated into the UK charts.

New rules introduced in this week's chart mean that download sales will now count irrespective of whether the single is on sale in the shops. The recognition of digital sales alone has seen several artists re-enter the charts after a period of absence, including Nelly Furtado's former number one Maneater and Gnarls Barkley's Crazy, which broke records last April when it shot to the top spot after selling 2m downloads prior to its release.
